Abstract

The voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) assume an important role in commercial relations. Homogenization of product characteristics and certification of their quality are induced by the requirements of the large multinational chains. These are impositions that suppliers must conform to in order to guarantee access to more regulated markets in terms of environmental, social and corporate criteria. In this article, the VSS are embedded within a theoretical framework, filling a gap on the effects of private standards on international trade. Through a bibliographic review, the article discusses the transmission channels of the VSS to trade, the effects of directed production processes from the suppliers’ and consumers’ viewpoints and the role of retail chains in disseminating and encouraging the adoption of the VSS. The text focuses on agrifood goods, as they are the most regulated through VSS.
