Poverty profile: the rural North and Northeast regions of Brazil

Abstract

"Rates of poverty and extreme poverty have decreased significantly in Brazil over the last 10 years. The prevalence of poverty dropped from 20 per cent to just over 9 per cent of the population, while the prevalence of extreme poverty fell from 7 per cent to 4 per cent in the same period. A continued decrease is unlikely in the future, however, as two of the factors driving the decrease face limitations or significant problems: the labour market and social spending—most notably, social insurance and assistance." "A pobreza e a extrema pobreza vêm diminuindo de modo expressivo nos últimos dez anos (2004-2013). A prevalência da pobreza caiu de 20 por cento para pouco mais de 9 por cento da população. No caso da extrema pobreza, a prevalência caiu de 7 por cento para 4 por cento. Verifica-se, no atual momento, uma descontinuidade nessa redução, dado que dois fatores fundamentais da queda da pobreza apresentam limitações ou problemas bem significativos: o mercado de trabalho e o gasto social, notadamente o assistencial e o da previdência."(...)
