Human development and land tenure in Brazil

Abstract

"This study proposes to investigate how living conditions and human development in the rural environment might be linked to a structural characteristic of the Brazilian countryside: the high concentration of land ownership. It offers statistical evidence that highlights how the markedly unequal land tenure structures in Brazil can affect the indicators of human development, especially of the rural population. It joins other studies that, with similar technical and methodological approaches, have analysed the relationship between the geographic distribution of well-being indicators and distinct patterns of land occupation". "Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar em que medida as condições de vida e de desenvolvimento humano estão associadas a um elemento estruturante e característico do campo brasileiro: a alta concentração fundiária. Apresenta-se um conjunto de informações e evidências que indicam os efeitos negativos da distribuição marcadamente desigual da posse da terra no Brasil sobre o bem-estar, principalmente da população rural. Ou, dito de outra forma, conclui-se que estruturas fundiárias mais desiguais estão associadas a padrões de qualidade de vida relativamente baixos". (...)
