Abstract

This study aims to investigate gender disparities in the prevalence and intensity of depression and verify the relationship between the prevalence/intensity of depression and professional occupations. We use data from the Brazilian National Health Survey of 2013. In our empirical strategy, we first estimate a depression index based on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and use a Graded Response Model from Item Response Theory. Next, we compare the distribution of the depression index by gender using Relative Distribution Methods. Finally, we test for the relationship between the prevalence/intensity of depression and labor market occupations of survey respondents using Two-Part Models, controlling by gender and other confounding variables. The empirical results reveal that, although occupations are not related to the probability of depression, they are associated with its level, for people affected. Most qualified occupations are positively related to the intensity of the depressão, especially for homens.
