Abstract

This essay addresses some of the most important aspects underlying cooperation between China and Venezuela during the government of former President Hugo Chávez (1999-2013). Numerous commitments were signed and the result was a significant volume of investments and loans that Beijing granted to Caracas, and in return Venezuelan increased its oil exports and advanced large infrastructure projects with China, opening the door to future alliances still on the way to consolidation. The article analyzes the evolution and the main economic and political issues of this cooperation highlighting three neuralgic areas: energy, infrastructure and transport and industries. It concludes that during the government of former President Hugo Chávez, such cooperation was widely developed, allowing China to consider Venezuela as one of its regional ally par excellence.
