Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo é estimar a população infantil urbana do Estado de Minas Gerais que, dadas a sua faixa etária e a natureza do seu ambiente familiar, formaria a população-alvo do programa Curumim. Este programa é uma ação complementar à escola levada a cabo pelo Estado de Minas Gerais em cooperação com as prefeituras municipais desde 1991, com o objetivo de elevar o nível de bem-estar das crianças de seis a 12 anos e promover seu pleno desenvolvimento. O objetivo básico deste estudo é obter previsões, espacialmente desagregadas, para a população-alvo do programa Curumim para o final desta década, seguindo quatro passos a saber: especificar os critérios que uma criança ou família deva atender para pertencer à população-alvo; identificar uma fonte de informação que permita estimar de forma espacialmente desagregada, e para o ano-base, a população do estado que atende a estes critérios; estimar, com base nesta fonte de informação, a população-alvo de forma desagregada para o ano-base e, finalmente, prever, com base em estimativas para taxa de crescimento populacional e para renda per capita, como a população-alvo deve evoluir entre o ano-base; e, o horizonte escolhido.

The aim of this study is to estimate the urban child population in the State of Minas Gerais which, given its age group and nature of its family environment, would form the target population for the Curumim program. This program is a complementary action to the schools undertaken by Minas Gerais State since 1991, in conjunction with the municipal governments, with the objective of raising the welfare level of children between six and 12 years old and further their full development. The basic aim of this study is to obtain forecasts for the end of the 1990s, broken down by area, of the Curumim program target population, in four steps, as follows: to specify the criteria which a child or family must adopt to belong to the target population; to identify an information source which permits an estimate, broken down in area and for the base year, of the population in the state which adopts these criteria; to estimate, based on this source of information, the target population, classified for the base year; and lastly, based on estimates for the population growth rate and per capita income, to project how the target population shall develop between the base year and chosen horizon.
