Abstract

The text addresses the complex and multidimensional nature of poverty, focusing on the deprivation of minimum survival resources, such as food, as a criterion for absolute poverty, highlighting rural areas as the epicenter of global extreme poverty. Despite poverty being more intense in rural areas, the majority of the poor population in Latin America and the Caribbean reside in urban areas, where they face unemployment or informal employment, lack of social protection, and access to essential services. While rural poverty is proportionally higher, urban poverty is more widespread in absolute terms, due to the inability of urban areas to absorb the migrant population, emphasizing the need for interventions that address both rural and urban areas to reduce extreme poverty.
