dc.description.abstractThis paper presents some preliminary observations on the evoluing structure of commercial banking in Brazil in the period 1955-66. The growth of banking facilities and the salient features of banking legislation in relation to branching activity are considered initially. Evidence on concentration ratios is given in the subsequent section. The final part of the paper examines cost and earning data and the effect of bank size on efficiency and profitability.pt_BR
