Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the determinants of happiness in Brazil of a regional approach using the World Values Survey (WVS), database for the years 2006 and 2014. A ordered logit model was from a set of personal attributes of the interviewees to two regions with very distinct historical and socioeconomic characteristics: Northeast and Southeast. The use of two years allowed to analyze the temporal alteration of those who declared themselves happy in the WVS. Among the main results, it is highlighted that the state of happiness is more intense in youth reaching a minimum point in the middle age and growing again. In addition, higher levels of unhappiness were observed in the unemployed, as well as the presence of children, which raise important questions in terms of public policies, such as social security and macroeconomic policies. Finally, the results reinforce that higher per capita income does not make life more satisfactory.
