Abstract

The article applies concepts of the field of International Political Economy (IPE) to analyze the evolution of the economic relations between China and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries, especially in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), or New Silk Road. Their economic interactions have increased in the last decade, especially through investments, loans, and infrastructure projects. It is argued that complementarity in the field of infrastructure reinforces BRI’s potential, although it does not eliminate existing asymmetries between the mentioned actors. The flexible nature of the initiative and its heterogeneous progress in the region require its “deconstruction” through case studies, as a means of elucidating the dilemmas, needs and cost-benefit perceptions regarding the “new guise” symbolized by the BRI in Sino-Latin American relations.
