Abstract
O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a relação entre o estado de saúde individual e a distribuição de renda no Brasil. Mais especificamente, estamos interessados em avaliar como a distribuição de renda impacta o estado de saúde auto-reportado dos indivíduos. A metodologia utilizada é o modelo logit
multinível. A base de dados empregada é a Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (Pnad) de 1993 e as Pnads de 1998 e 2003, que apresentam um suplemento especial contendo informações sobre o estado de saúde. Os principais resultados encontrados revelam que a distribuição de renda afeta o estado de
saúde auto-avaliado, apesar de a magnitude desse efeito ser pequena: quanto maior a desigualdade na
distribuição de renda, menor é a chance de o indivíduo reportar um melhor estado de saúde.

The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between individual health status and income distribution in Brazil. Specifically, we are interested in evaluating how income distribution impacts individual self-reported health status. The methodology used in this work is the logit multilevel model. Our database is PNAD (National Household Survey) 1993 and PNADs 1998 and 2003, wich present a special survey about
health status and other related subjects. Our main findings suggest that income distribution affects individual self-reported health status, although the magnitude of this effect is small: the higher is tends to be income inequality, the worse individual health status.
