Abstract

This work proposes a spatial analysis of Brazil in four territorialities: Legal Amazon, border strip, seafront
and semi-arid. This division is an attempt to broaden the scope of knowledges about the Brazilian territory
beyond usual methodologies, such as by dividing it on macro-regions. To this purpose, this work constructs
a Social Vulnerability Index (IVS), using data from the 2000 and 2010 Demographic Censuses. The obtained
results point to a general reduction in social vulnerability at the analyzed areas, but further studies are needed to identify converging and diverging points within the studied territorialities. The breakdown of the 2000 and 2010 IVS by skin tones showed that the black population has progressed more significantly, but still lives in much greater social vulnerability than the white population.
