Abstract

This article looks at the case of Chile to investigate the hypothesis that accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) raises investor confidence in a country´s policies and institutions and, thus, contributes to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) flows. To construct a credible counterfactual, the synthetic control method (SCM) is employed. The results indicate a substantial impact of accession on FDI flows – nearly 35% of Chile’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the eight years after the accession process started (accumulated), most of which after the conclusion of this process.
