Abstract

"For most of the past decade, Brazil seemed to be on track to reduce its hitherto extreme level of income inequality. All survey estimates pointed in the same direction: the country was finally experiencing pro-poor growth. However, household surveys have some well-known limitations, especially when it comes to assessing the incomes of the rich. Consequently, data from personal income tax declarations are invaluable to assess the concentration of income at the top. Indeed, estimates based on publicly available income tax tabulations published over the past few years shed new light on the level and evolution of income inequality in Brazil". (...)
"Nos últimos anos, o Brasil parecia estar no rumo certo para reduzir seus níveis extremos de desigualdade. Todas as estimativas fundamentadas em pesquisas domiciliares indicavam a mesma direção: o país finalmente vivia um ciclo de crescimento pró-pobre. No entanto, essas pesquisas têm limitações bem conhecidas, especialmente no que diz respeito à coleta dos rendimentos dos mais ricos. Por isso, as informações do imposto de renda de pessoas físicas são de valor inestimável para o estudo da concentração de renda no topo. Com efeito, estimativas com base nas tabulações publicamente disponíveis jogam nova luz sobre o nível e a evolução da desigualdade de renda no Brasil". (...)
