Abstract

Examines the structure of tariffs and protective measures in Brazil, comparing the periods before and after the 1967 tariff reform. It explores Brazil's economic performance, emphasizing the rapid industrial growth in the post-war period, driven by import substitution, which led to significant industrial diversification and a marked reduction in dependency on imported goods. The chapter also highlights regional and sectoral imbalances, showcasing income disparities between the Northeast and the Center-South, as well as issues related to international trade, such as the central role of coffee in exports and the composition of Brazil’s main imports and exports. Data and tables illustrate the progression of industrialization and the impact of import substitution on the country’s economic structure.
