Abstract

This paper uses micro data from the 1995-1996 Agricultural Census to calculate differences in total factor productivity (TFP) between family and non-family farms, and input intensive and non-input intensive farms. Difference in TFP are explained– for each of the five Brazilian macro regions–as a function of farm size, supply of public goods and access to institutions, and local variables measured directly or through a municipality fixed effect. The results indicate that: a) the inverse relationship between land productivity and farm size, a stylized fact in the literature, is verified in all regions, but the inverse relationship between TFP and farm size is verified only in the North, Northeast and Southeast, and for the non-intensive farms in the other regions. In other words, as input intensity increases, a direct relationship between farm size and TFP begins to emerge; b) family farms have higher land productivity in seven of ten cases, but lower TFP in eight of ten cases. A significant portion of this difference is due to unobserved variables; and c) input intensive farms are more productive in all regions, and observed variables explain most of this difference.
