Abstract

The chapter highlights the relevance of the discussion on public revenues in the context of the Brazilian economy, marked by a transition to macroeconomic stability and sustained growth. Although fiscal adjustment was boosted after the Fiscal Stability Program (1998) and the Fiscal Responsibility Law (2000), there are concerns about excessive dependence on public revenue growth, mainly through an increase in the tax burden. The chapter points out that the adjustment has been focused on revenues, evidenced by the continued growth in current expenses. The analysis of the tax burden reveals a significant increase, reaching 37.37% of GDP in 2005. The growth in cumulative contributions is highlighted, indicating distortions in the decisions of economic agents.
