Abstract

Since the publication of Gosta Esping-Andersen’s seminal work The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism, the literature on state and welfare systems has moved towards a taxonomy of each country’s systems. East Asian high-income countries, however, would hardly fit into the “bed of Procrustes” of this typology. This paper argues that culture is the most important factor to consider when examining this issue, and for that it presents an interpretation of the Confucian welfare state.
