Abstract
O ano 2000 ficou marcado pelos compromissos assumidos pela comunidade internacional na Cimeira do Milénio. Esperamos que, em breve, haja um novo cenário com a implementação desses compromissos em todo o mundo. A evolução desse processo é importante para reduzir a pobreza e promover um desenvolvimento saudável e sustentável. Os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio (ODM) apontam algumas áreas prioritárias que precisam ser abordadas para eliminar a pobreza extrema. Esses objetivos não constituem uma visão abrangente do desenvolvimento, mas sim marcos, fornecendo indicações claras sobre o progresso do desenvolvimento inclusivo e equitativo em diferentes sociedades. O Relatório Brasileiro é mais um exemplo do comprometimento dos brasileiros com esse esforço coletivo. O processo de relatar nacionalmente o progresso dos ODMs reúne
tomadores de decisão, especialistas e pesquisadores de diferentes instituições para avaliar como o progresso pode ser acelerado e sustentado. O Sistema das Nações Unidas no Brasil está imbuído do espírito de colaboração com os esforços nacionais para o alcance dos ODM. Esperamos que, nos 11 anos que faltam para cumprir as metas definidas em 2000, esta mobilização continue à escala global e nos diferentes níveis da sociedade.

The year 2000 was marked by the commitments undertaken by the international community at the Millennium Summit. We hope that, shortly, there will be a new setting with the implementation of these commitments throughout the world. The evolution of this process is important to reduce poverty and promote sound and sustainable development. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) point to some priority areas that need to be addressed in order to eliminate extreme poverty. These objectives do not constitute a comprehensive view of development, but rather milestones, providing clear indications concerning the progress of inclusive and equitable development in different societies. The Brazilian Report is another example of the commitment of Brazilians to this collective effort. The process of nationally reporting the progress of MDGs brings together
decision-makers, experts and researchers of different institution to evaluate how progress can be expedited and sustained. The United Nations System in Brazil is filled with the spirit of collaboration with national efforts for the achievement of the MDGs. We hope that, in the 11 years remaining to meet the targets defined in 2000, this mobilization will continue on a global scale and in the different levels of society.
