dc.description.abstractO texto resume algumas das mais importantes características da indústria de transporte rodoviário e apresenta uma discussão sobre o seu desempenho. Identifica áreas onde a ação governamental será necessária para corrigir falhas de mercado ou remover regulamentações inadequadas. Apresenta a estrutura, o tamanho e a importância econômica da indústria. Faz uma breve revisão das regulamentações governamentais. Analisa o desempenho industrial, incluindo: níveis de investimento, renovação e adequação da frota, consumo e possibilidades de conservação de energia, estruturas de custo e tarifas de fretes, o impacto das regulamentações e fatores relacionados à eficiência e crescimento. Apresenta também sugestões para estudos futuros.pt_BR
dc.description.abstractalternativeThis study summarizes some of the most important characteristics of the road transportation industry, and presents a discussion of its performance. The main objective is identifying areas where government action may be needed in order to correct market failures or to remove inadequate regulation. In the first part, the structure, size and economic relevance of the industry are presented. There is also a brief review of government regulation. The second part is dedicated to analyzing the industry performance, including: investment levels; fleet renewal and adequacy; energy consumption and conservation possibilities; cost structures and freight rates; the impact of government regulation and factors concerning efficiency and growth. Suggestions for further studies are also outlined.pt_BR
