Abstract

The growth of female participation in Brazilian labour force follows a pattern occurring over the whole Latin American subcontinent in the last decades of the twentieth century. The several studies done on the theme conclude that the dynamism of female entrance in the labour market did not entail a decreasing of professional inequalities between genders. What was new about Brazil was that the intense productive restructuring in the national manufacturing industry failed to expel female workforce from the labour market; its share remained at the same levels of the middle eighties. Thus, contrary to what one would expect, this restructuring did not promote a “return to home” of female industrial workers. The present work studies the response of female industrial employment to the structural changes that took place in the productive process of manufactures, analysing whether the potentialities present in the new production paradigms have enlarged the opportunities for access to jobs and improved conditions for women to remain in industrial occupations. Taking this concern as the main thread, we analysed female industrial occupation in the years 1985, 1993 and 1997 in the Brazilian manufactures. The evaluation used the variables sex, age, schooling, revenues, family status and occupation. In order to better understand the dynamics of the labour market segmentation process, a “mixity” indicator was built for some occupational groups; the data base used was the special tabulations of PNAD/IBGE.
