Abstract

The chapter addresses the impacts of Brazilian social security on the national economic scenario, highlighting that spending on retirement and pensions corresponds to 12% of Brazil's GDP. Although this represents progress in terms of social security coverage and potential reduction in poverty among the elderly, there is a significant opportunity cost, as these resources could be directed to areas with greater potential to sustain economic growth. Brazil stands out internationally, ranking 14th out of 113 countries in terms of spending on pensions as a proportion of GDP. The study, which analyzes 49 countries after considering several variables, explores the demographic structure, the relationship between retirement and per capita income, the participation of taxpayers in the workforce, contribution rates and the minimum ages required for retirement. This provides a more comprehensive analysis, revealing the complexity of the factors involved in social security spending and their relationships with demographics and contribution policies.
