Abstract

Since de end of the slavery, the Angolan economy is characterized by the production of primary goods. In the major part of the XX Century, coffee and diamonds were the main exports. In the early 1970s, the country has been elevated to the status of major world producer of oil after the discovery of deposits in the Angolan coast. Since then, the Angolan economy has gained contours of mono-exporter and oil started to finance everything: food imports to replace lost production, replacement of machinery in industry and war effort. In this scenario, the crisis of 2008 was an extremely critical time for the Angolan economy due to the fall in oil prices. Therefore, this article aims to conduct a historical analysis of Angola since its independence until the 2008 crisis and its aftermath.
