Abstract
Organizar grandes eventos esportivos, notadamente a Copa do Mundo de Futebol e os Jogos Olímpicos, constitui iniciativa cobiçada por diferentes países e cidades ou regiões. O motivo prende-se aos esperados benefícios políticos e, principalmente, econômicos, geralmente assimilados a tais ocorrências. O impacto no turismo, com reflexos na entrada de divisas por conta dos gastos de estrangeiros, tem destaque nos argumentos em favor das candidaturas. Este artigo ocupa-se desse assunto focalizando a realização da Copa do Mundo de 2014 no Brasil. Mediante modelagem econométrica, investiga-se a relação entre o evento e as receitas cambiais com viagens internacionais no país. Este estudo específico é colocado em perspectiva, pois antes se discute o interesse nesse tipo de competição, destacam-se as controvérsias sobre os respectivos pontos positivos e negativos e se analisa o papel atribuído aos resultados turísticos na argumentação pela condição de sede. Nas considerações finais, sintetizam-se os principais pontos deste artigo e se indica a importância do monitoramento dos resultados desses megaeventos.

Different countries and cities or regions usually dispute the condition of hosting mega sporting events, especially the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup. The reasons have to do with the political and, above all, the economic benefits generally seen in such competitions. Impacts on the tourism sector, with the injection of currency coming from the expenditures of foreign visitors, outstand among the arguments in favor of the candidatures. The article looks at this subject by considering the World Cup 2014, hosted by Brazil. Employing econometric modeling, the relationship between the World Cup and the influx of revenues is investigated. But this specific analysis is preceded by a discussion about the interests provoked by those events, the different positions concerning their benefits or otherwise, and the way the expectations around tourism affect the disposition to dispute the hosting. In the final comments, the main questions are summarized and the importance of systematically observing the consequences of these events is stressed.
