Abstract
O processo de tomada de decisão dos jovens quanto ao acesso ao ensino superior pode definir sua trajetória rumo à ascensão econômica e ao sucesso profissional. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se a demissão da pessoa de referência na família tem influência na probabilidade dos seus dependentes ingressarem no ensino superior. Para isto, foi empregado o modelo Probit com o intuito de identificar se a demissão do chefe de família e outras variáveis de family background afetam as chances de os jovens ingressarem na universidade. Constatou-se que a demissão da pessoa de referência reduz significativamente as chances de acesso de seu dependente ao ensino superior. Os resultados indicaram que o efeito da demissão sobre o ingresso do jovem no ensino superior é maior para indivíduos com idade entre 16 e 20 anos.

The youngsters’ process of decision-making about the access to higher education can define their course towards the economic ascension and professional success. In this sense, the objective of this research was to verify if the dismissal of the family’s reference person influences the probability of access to higher education of the offspring. In this regard, a Probit model was used in a way to verify if the dismissal of the head of the family and other variables related to the family’s background affect the youngsters’ chances of accessing college. Results showed that the dismissal of the reference person reduced significantly the chances of the dependents access higher education. Furthermore, results indicated that the effect of the dismissal over the chances of the youngsters enter college was higher for individuals aged between 16 and 20 years.
