Abstract

This paper deals with labor demand models that consider work hours as an additional variable in the process of profit maximization. We first show how usual static models work and how they conclude that reductions in standard hours lead to reductions in employment level. Thus, work-sharing does not occur. On the other band, the effect on current hours depends on additional assumptions about complementary or substitutability between hours and employment. The innovation here is to include the turnover costs of work force, generating dynamic relations in the analysis. Our main finding is that, even with this more rigorous specification of the firm’s cost structure, we still obtain the result of non-occurrence of work-sharing. Besides this conclusion, the paper provides optimal paths of demand for hours and workers with a quadratic adjustment cost function. These analytical solutions are perhaps the most important achievement. Thereafter, the introduction of the rational expectations framework allows us to detail the firm’s response to demand shocks as well as to link the model with the empirical work.
