Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of rural credit and its relationship with deforestation in Brazil between 2019 and 2024. We analyzed financing operations in areas with deforestation alerts using data from the MapBiomas platform’s Rural Credit Monitor. The study revealed that, although the total volume of rural credit grew between 2019 and 2024, the share of financing in deforested areas showed a downward trend, with more significant drops from 2021 onwards, especially in the North and Northeast regions, where deforestation rates are still higher. The results indicate that the actions adopted to decouple credit from deforestation are already beginning to show positive results, and it is recommended that they be expanded and improved.
