Abstract

The rise of China in the 21st century showed not only the success of the Asian model of development and international integration, but also posed a challenge to the global political system created in the Postwar. The fear of the growing Chinese influence in international relations – and, in particular, the shifting of the democratic consensus to a centralized and nationalist model –, was exacerbated by the apparent inability of the Western powers in weathering the global crisis that started in 2008. The aim of this study is to discuss some of the consequences of the economic rise of Asia, especially China, regarding the dissemination of new cultural values that contrast with the Western tradition. The paper presents the key elements of Confucian thought in the Chinese productive organization, and discusses its influence in the economic models of some the largest economies in Southeast Asia.
