| dc.description.abstractalternative | This article presents the “three new” – lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, and solar panels – and analyzes their importance in China’s energy transition. Besides reducing Chinese emissions, they have boosted its economic growth, representing 6% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024. China leads in these sectors with, respectively, 80%, 70%, and 85% of global production, and 65%, 40%, and 85% of exports. Associated with these goods are critical minerals – such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite –, which are essential to produce these products. China accounts for the highest demand for these minerals and is also the global leader in their refining. From a geoeconomic theoretical perspective, the article maps the global supply chain of critical minerals, including the location of reserves and extraction sites in the countries that supply them to China, and identifies Chinese outward foreign investments in these countries. Finally, the article discusses how critical minerals have become a geoeconomic tool for States, with China standing out as the country best positioned to deploy it. The findings indicate that China’s privileged position in the key stages of extraction, refining, and production reinforces the establishment of Chinese technological standards in the global energy transition process. | |
