Abstract

This study aims to assess the potential benefits of energy cooperation among the BRICS countries, with a focus on critical minerals, renewable energy, and low-carbon technologies (LCTs). It is argued that the grouping can help reduce vulnerabilities and enhance effective pathways for energy transition, by aligning common interests and enabling long-term economic and socio-environmental gains. Complementarities and potential benefits are identified in advancing agendas for value addition and the industrialization of critical minerals. Moreover, synergies are observed that could help close investment gaps and promote the diversification of energy systems, as well as the formation of cooperative arrangements based on the specific attributes and capabilities of BRICS countries. Finally, there is significant potential to foster research and development initiatives, encouraging innovation and the deployment of emerging technologies.
