Abstract

Given the rapid spread of conditional transfer programs around the World since the 1990s, this article presents three goals. First, to contextualize the international scene that marked the emergence of this type of program. Second, to briefly discuss some theoretical arguments that justify both the direct transfer of cash and the presence of conditionalities. Finally, to outline the recent changes and trends that occurred in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of conditional cash transfers, detailing some of the existing programs.
