Abstract

Education differentials by region and by gender among the Brazilian population are quite large. This is partially due to the different probability of access to the school system as well as the drop out probability. This paper computes and describes the proportion of population that achieved a certain grade level (first, fourth, fifth and eight grades) in two socioeconomically different states of : Ceará and Rio de Janeiro, in 1996 (latest available data for census information). Moreover, temporal evolution of the proportion of population by age and sex that manage to finish each grade is conducted.
